• Howdy!

    I have been very active over at Wikipedia in cleaning-up and maintaining the Formula 1 Records pages (for drivers and constructors ). Unfortunately, the community over there is of the opinion that none of it belongs on Wikipedia, and they suggested that the data should be found on a website like StatsF1.com or even here. My issue with StatsF1.com is that there are mistakes in their data, and their data is also incomplete, which leaves this wiki as the only real option. However, this wiki seems to have been idle for 3 or 4 years.

    Could you inform me of the status of this project? What I am interested in doing is setting up a template for career results for drivers and constructors, which would make referencing and updating the data much easier than the manual task over at Wikipedia (they only use a template for active drivers and constructors, not for historical data).

    Would this be a good place for that or should I start my own section on wikia?

    Cheers,

    tlhIngan

    • Hi, this project was started after ManipeF1 closed in order to create a database system to generate stats for the history of F1. I assume ManipeF1 used SQL to store and generate data from a central database. I attempted to create that type of system here but Wikia (now Fandom) doesn't support SQL in the way I would have liked. As a result, this project was abandoned without really getting off the ground. If you would like to try to work with this Wiki, I will grant you the admin rights to do so, but your input may be better suited to our primary site at F1 Wiki. Unfortunately I do not have the time to work heavily on either site, but we have some active admins over there who may be able to advise you.

      Thanks

    • I'd like to start poking around creating a career stats template. If it works the way I think it does, I can start bringing data over from Wikipedia. :)

    • OK, I've granted you admin rights so you can tinker with whatever you like. If there's anything you need help/advice with then let me know. I'll keep an eye on your progress.

  • What about just doing the 0 for default is usually the case for the seasons.

  • I think we have trouble cause I can't get a result for the drivers on the French and Italian Grand Prix

    • My fault. When I changed the results template, I forgot to relabel the parameter in the templates. Each template should start with {{#switch:{} instead of {{#switch:{Position}. I'm fixing it now.

  • I am thinking of an idea for comparison of pole times and speeds and fastest lap times and speeds.

    The template 1950 British Grand Prix/PoleSpeed would, after any templates and switches, would most likely contain the following:

year = 1950
race = 1950 British Grand Prix
configuration = 1
distance = 4.649
driver = Giuseppe Farina
team = Alfa Romeo
car = 158
time = 1:50.8
speed = 151.051

    Which would show on Silverstone/Pole speeds:

    Race Configuration Distance Driver Team Car Time Speed
    1950 British Grand Prix 1 4.649 km Giuseppe Farina Alfa Romeo 158 1:50.8 151.051

    The coding of the above:

Race !! Configuration !! Distance !! Driver !! Team !! Car !! Time !! Speed
1950 British Grand Prix || 1 || 4.649 km || Giuseppe Farina || Alfa Romeo || 158 || 1:50.8 || 151.051

    Your thoughts?

    • MTracey1: Agreed. Since it is my idea, I know how I want it to look and I'll try my best to create it and I'll start with the poles. (You'll probably fix some bits of it I can't do)

      Matt: In some books, such as the Grand Prix Data Book, the pole speed is quoted before the pole time. Also, speeds are more comparable than times.

    • I've removed "Speed" from the names. These can serve as pole lists, fastest lap lists and winners lists for circuits, drivers, events, etc. I have prepared the templates for this.

  • Would a small driver infobox be a good idea? The reason I said "or databox" is that all it would include is name, nationality, d.o.b., d.o.d. and years competed (maybe a few more stats), which is a compact set of data which doesn't go into too much detail. I would say an image is not required.

    • Could do, although that all depends on what the purpose of this site is. If the F1-Stats Wiki is solely to provide a framework for F1 Wiki, then I don't think an infobox is required. On the other hand, if this wiki is to be a standalone entity in its own right, then an infobox (with picture) is probably appropriate.

    • We'll see how it develops, if it turns into a usable standalone wiki, then make it.

  • Do you need any help, cause I will help if you want

    • You can help if you like. At the moment, I'm inputting stats for the 1950 races into templates: , , for example. The plan is to have results, laps completed and laps led (more later) for every race so I can create a database-style stats site. For syntax, just copy the layout of the 1950 British Grand Prix page. I will be working on this site quite heavily from the end of the week but I have uni work to catch up on in the meantime. If you need any assistance, let me know. I will make you an admin here so you can edit after I've protected the templates. Thanks for your help.
